Something like this ?
https://www.shelly.com/en-de/products/p ... on-1-black
These shelly products support MQTT 'out of the box'. You will install mosquitto MQTT broker on your Pi and write a small program which receives the button events and triggers your shell scripts.

There is also https://www.shelly.com/en-de/products/p ... ch-1-white which needs a shelly relay.
Yes this is what I am looking for. To be honest I have no experience with home automation until now. I just read a few tutorials and watches some YT videos.

Would the shelly device require additional hardware?

I saw some tutorials and they featured ZigBee buttons/switches which I also found in several different web shops. But as far as I understood I would need a zigbee gateway for those devices. Correct? What is then the difference between a gateway that is directly connected to the PI (I saw USB & small boards attached to the GPIOs) and those which are within the network? And I would need software like e.g. Home Assistant to get all that working?

Thanks a lot for any hint.

Tommy
