That is very confusing : who is right, the raspberry pi documentation or Panasonic ? Something I am missing ?
I don't see anything contradictory is the docs:
We do not recommend using a primary lithium cell for the RTC, as it has a trickle charge circuit which is disabled by default. If enabled, this will kill the cell quickly.
This says do not use a primary (non-reachargeable) cell for the RTC, as if charging is accidentally enabled, you will kill the cell.

It does not imply that all secondary (rechargeable) cells are suitable for trickle charging. You would have to check the relevant specs. But we can say the official RTC backup battery is suitable for trickle charging (and the docs tell you how to enable it).

It appears the Panasonic ML2020 is not suitable for trickle charging (but that is not what is used in the offical RTC backup battery).
