This raises two questions:
1) What is the default? It sounds like the default is "none", so this begs the question: How do I change it?
2) As it turns out, I'm not so much worried about accessing the ADS from Linux (though I suppose it would be nice). What I'm more concerned with is that once I take the drive back to Windows, it will be there. Hence the way I specified the test in the OP. From the text quoted by thagrol, it sounds like it will be there (even if it is *not* accessible from Linux).
P.S. I'm still curious about the ambiguity of "a:foo". I'll have to test that at some point.
