I also searched the forum here (using the term 'screen-blanking' well as 'screen blanking'!), however cannot sensibly choose from the 1200+ results. Since there isn't presently another topic with the exact title of this one, here it is now.
My understanding of screen-blanking is that the video output signal is switched off. This should enable an attached monitor to to detect a lack of signal and in turn, switch itself off (if configured to do so).
